Honda Rings up Multiple Value Awards from KBB.com and ALG

Honda_11_28

Even as the U.S. economy continues to rebound, auto shoppers continue to put a high emphasis on value—and Honda continues to deliver. In fact, the brand just garnered 11 more third-party value honors from two of the most respected names in the business.

They included six trophies in the recent Best Resale Value Awards, presented annually by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com website:

  • The all-new Accord earned the Best Resale Value Award in the Mid-Size Car segment.
  • Three individual honors went to the Civic, including Best Resale Value in the Compact Car class, Best Resale Value in the Sporty Compact Car category (thanks to the Civic Si), and a place on the overall top-10 best values roster.
  • Joining the Civic on the industry’s top-10 list was the CR-V
  • The Fit took top resale-value honors among the Subcompacts.

“Honda vehicles are engineered to provide a fun-to-drive experience as well as overall value for the money,” according to Michael Accavitti, vice president of national marketing ops for American Honda. “With a continued focus on quality, fuel-efficiency and premium content, we have always believed that a Honda provides every buyer with added value, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts by valuation leader Kelley Blue Book.”

In addition, ALG—creators of the original Automotive Leasing Guide—recently honored another trio of Honda products for their standout residual values. The Accord, Fit and Odyssey each won their segments, while Honda captured the grand prize as the Best Mainstream Brand.

“Long-term value and reliability are both hallmarks of the Honda brand, and we are honored to be recognized by ALG as the industry leader in these key qualities,” added Accavitti. “The Honda engineering philosophy not only delivers immediate value to our customers, but will pay off in the long run as well.”

CR-Z Powers up for 2013

Honda_article

America’s first sport hybrid is getting both sportier and more fuel efficient for the 2013 model year, thanks to new lithium-ion battery technology in the Honda CR-Z.

The revised battery pack can now deliver some 15 kW of power—a jump of 50 percent over the previous unit—and boosts the total system output in the car to 130 hp and 140 lb.-ft. of torque with its six-speed manual transmission (or 127 lb.-ft. in the CVT-equipped model). In addition, a new “Plus Sport” model has been integrated into the CR-Z’s drive system to deliver a short-term burst of additional power at the press of a button—as long as the car’s battery is at least 50 percent charged. But at the same time engineers were making the CR-Z more athletic, they also ensured it would be less thirsty, too. Thus, the changes to the car’s batteries also deliver an extra mpg on the highway when the CR-Z is configured with the DIY gearbox, lifting its EPA line to 31 mpg city/38 mpg highway/34 mpg combined. An additional 1 mpg in the city has been squeezed out of the CVT version, resulting in EPA marks of 36/39/37.

Refreshed Crosstour Delivers Aggressive Style and More Power

Honda_article

One of the country’s most distinctive crossover vehicles—the Honda Crosstour—is back and better than ever for the 2013 model year. Significantly refreshed and scheduled to go on sale on November 20, the 2013 Crosstour will offer more style, more power, and more fuel-efficiency, all while having less of an impact on your bank account. That’s because while engineers were adding new features to the car, accountants were removing $525 from its MSRP, with the 2013 model wearing a sticker price that starts at $27,230.

But as mentioned, the lower starting point gets you a higher level of content, including standard equipment like a rearview camera, Bluetooth technology, and Honda’s Expanded View Driver’s Mirror; meanwhile, the premium trim lines will welcome fresh features, too, with safety measures such as lane-departure, blind-spot and forward-collision systems, along with a new keyless entry/push-button start feature. The 2013 Honda Crosstour then showcases a more aggressive and premium appearance, inside and out, with a boldly retailored grille, improved cabin materials and a more detailed design at the rear.

The biggest changes, however, go more than skin deep: Thanks to a wide range of incremental enhancements, engineers have squeezed an additional 2 mpg worth of fuel efficiency—in all phases of EPA testing—from the 2013 Crosstour’s I4 engine, which is now in line to score EPA marks of 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. Further, the V6-powered Crosstour will welcome a brand-new, V6 engine with Honda’s Earth Dreams technology, an additional 7 hp, a wider torque band, and EPA grades that improve to 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway/23 mpg combined in its two-wheel-drive configuration; with all-wheel drive, the Crosstour’s EPA line grows to 18/28/22.

The bottom line from the automaker: “The rugged new styling, teamed with class-leading fuel-efficiency and a lower MSRP on the base four-cylinder model make the 2013 Honda Crosstour the smartest choice in a premium mid-size crossover.”

Honda Micro-Commuter Prototype Takes a Step Towards Reality

Honda_mini

With the original model looking straight out of a sci-fi movie, this latest version trades its covered wheels for exposed tiny rollers, while the shape more closely resembles a mini-car. At 98.4-inches in length its roughly half-a-foot shorter than a Smart fortwo.

Inside the cabin now more closely resembles a production vehicle, trading a steering wheel that operated like a joystick for a traditional two-spoke unit.

If there is one future-forward aspect, it’s that the car’s dash is actually a tablet, displaying information like vehicle speed and the range left in the batteries, while also doubling as a back-up camera.

Based on what Honda calls a “Variable Design Platform” the concept uses a basic structure and battery pack design, which allows for the body to be modified for different needs. Shown here is a three-seat layout, with space for one adult driver and two children behind, while Honda also says a small van-style body could be fitted, or even a convertible.

Powered by a 15 kW electric motor, the Micro-Commuter concept has a range of 60 km (37 miles) and a charge time of 3 hours, with a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

An urban mobility solution, Honda is pushing ahead with the Micro-Commuter for use on Japanese and European roads in a unique class of vehicle that sits between motorcycles and the smallest cars currently available.

CR-V Is Best-selling Crossover in America

Crvsells

The Honda CR-V reclaimed its position as the best-selling crossover—or SUV—in the country in October, delivering 20,205 units and a 4.5 percent sales increase over the same month last year. Although Honda’s hot-seller has never relinquished its lead on a year-to-date basis, and led the country in crossover/SUV sales for five straight months (from January to May), it had been relegated to second place in the intervening months by the Ford Escape.

At this stage in the 2012 selling season, the CR-V’s sales lead over its Blue Oval rival has reached 13,679 units, with the former tallying 233,586 sales through October, to the latter’s 219,907. The Honda also has grown at a much faster pace, as sales have expanded by 29.5 percent during the first 10 months of the year, which compares to a mark of 6.3 percent for the Ford.

But the CR-V wasn’t the only Honda product to see particularly high demand in October. Also on the rise during the first full month of fall:

  • Honda Accord–The division’s all-new mid-size sedan is just now getting into dealerships and, in tandem with the 2012 model, rang up 28,349 October sales, representing a jump of 25.5 percent.
  • Honda Civic-—The No. 1 compact in America, the Civic enjoyed a 27.9 sales improvement last month, on the strength 20,687 deliveries.
  • Honda Fit—Honda’s nimble subcompact rang up 3,773 sales last month and grew sales by 37.3 percent.
  • Honda Crosstour—Leveraging a notable sales renaissance thanks to a freshened 2013 model, the unique Crosstour crossover saw a 19.3 percent sales spike and garnered 1,763 sales.
  • Honda Ridgeline—The Ridgeline’s 996 sales—13.2 percent more than in October 2011—were no doubt assisted by the fact that a rearview camera system is now standard across the entire lineup.

The bottom line for Honda last month was a healthy 8.7 percent sales jump that both outpaced the growth rate of the industry as a whole and resulted in 94,810 October deliveries for the brand.

2013 Accord Shows Its SEMA Side

Accord_coupe_001

Satisfying the demands of a wide variety of drivers is a top priority for the all-new 2013 Honda Accord, which will get the job done with traditional, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains—and a surprising sinister streak that was on full display at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. That’s the country’s most important industry-only show dedicated to the automotive aftermarket, and this year, it featured two specially tuned-up Accords.

The first, from Bisimoto Engineering, puts a Grand Touring spin on the new Accord Coupe with a Progress Technology coil-over suspension and sway bar for a Euro-tuned ride along with a Nitrous Express chemical supercharger system for “you’re kidding me” acceleration. Rocking more than 400 hp, the car also gets upgrades like a Buddy Club Racing Spec brake kit and aluminum wheels, ground effects body pieces from Honda Factory Performance, Falken tires, a Carbon Creations rear wing, and a host of enhancements from Bisimoto itself, ranging from a cat-back exhaust system to GT3 racing seats.

The second Accord at SEMA puts a little more focus on “show” rather than “go,” as to be expected when the build was overseen by DSO Eyewear and MAD Industries, a top purveyor of extreme sportswear and accessories. The slick sedan doesn’t get a fancy name, but it does wear some fancy duds—in this case a White Orchid Pearl exterior finish that is highlighted by a Matte Blue Metallic wrap from 3M Scotchprint. The cockpit then coddles occupants with premium Suedezkin and Katzkin leathers, 3M-wrapped accents to match the look of the exterior, and a Lightning Audio premium sound system.
